Falmouth beats Thorton Academy in a thriller Brady Coyne hit a walk –off single to score Eban Daniels in the bottom of the 7th inning as Falmouth beat Thorton Academy 4-3. Falmouth moves to 6-2 for the season and Thorton Academy took its first loss to drop to 6-1. The Trojans started hot. Cody Bowker and Brady Graffam each hit solo home runs in the top of the first to jump out to a quick 2-0 lead. Falmouth’s Gus Ford sparked the Yachtsmen in the bottom of the first by ripping a deep line-drive that one-hopped the fence for a ground rule double. He would come around to score on two wild pitches to cut the lead to 2-1 after one inning. Bennett Smith was on the mound for Falmouth. After the first inning outburst, he settled down and kept the Trojans at bay. He struck out 2 in the second inning. In the third Thorton had a runner reach on an error, steal second and move to third on a ground out. Smith picked him off to end the inning and end the threat. With 2 outs in the bottom on the third, Sam Kidder reached on an error and moved to second on an error. Ford came through again by hitting an infield single to score Kidder and even the game at 2-2. Thorton Academy again took the lead in the top of the fourth inning. A single and a double scored a run for a 3-2 run. The Trojans kept the pressure with another single and a stolen base to put runners on second and third. Smith put an end to the threat by picking off the runner at second. The lead was short lived as Falmouth tied up the game again in the bottom of the fourth inning. Patrick Gill walked and stole second. Sean Dillworth walked. A passed ball moved the runners to second and third and a wild pitch scored Gill for the 3-3 tie. Smith took over and shut down the Trojans in order in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings. For Falmouth, Kidder reached on a walk in the fifth and Smith reached on a walk in the sixth, but the Yachtsmen could not capitalize on either of those opportunities. In the bottom of the seventh, Falmouth’s Eban Daniels led off with a walk. He moved to second on a wild pitch. Kidder then walked. With one out, Coyne hit a sharp line-drive just out of the reach of the short-stop. Daniels raced around third and scored when the throw from center field short hopped the catcher. Falmouth walked-off with the 4-3 win. Smith earned the win going all 7 innings. He struck out 5, gave up 5 hits, did not walk anyone, and picked off 2 base runners. Joshua Kopetski took the loss for Thorton Academy. He pitched 6.1 innings, gave up only 3 hits. He struck out 10, but walked 6 and threw 5 wild pitches.Details
