CHEVERUS, FALMOUTH SPLIT: Patrick Gill drove in three runs and Brady Coyne added two RBI as Falmouth (12-3) earned a doubleheader split against Cheverus (11-5) with an 8-0 victory, after the visiting Stags took a 2-1 win in Game 1.

Eli Cowperthwaite allowed four hits over six innings to earn the Game 2 victory.

In Game 1, Sam Clark gave up three hits in 6 2/3 innings and Brian Connolly recorded the final out. Nick Giancotti hit a solo home run for Cheverus.

Bennett Smith pitched a three-hitter for Falmouth, but an unearned run in the fourth was the difference.

Falmouth offense comes alive in double header sweep over Portland

A display of power not seen in recent history led the Yachtsmen to a sweep over Portland. Falmouth won the first game 10-0 and the second game 13-2. Both games were shortened to 4 ½ innings.

Ben Wilson pitched the entire first game for Falmouth to earn the win. He shut out the Bulldogs allowing 4 hits and walking none. He struck out 5 in 5 innings of work.

Portland went in order in the first. In the Falmouth half of the inning, Brady Coyne was hit by a pitch to reach. Gus Ford then lined a home run over the left field fence for a 2-0 FHS lead. Patrick Gill kept the inning alive by walking and was scored on Ben Keller double. Falmouth led 3-0 after one inning.

In the second inning, Falmouth’s Ethan Hendry singled. Brennan Rumpf reached on a fielder’s choice eliminating Hendry.  Sam Kidder singled to put runners on first and second. Coyne then cleared the bases with a 3-run home run to extend the FHS lead to 6-0 after two innings.

Portland’s biggest scoring threat cam in the third when Jimmy Gignac singled and H Bibeau doubled, but Wilson got a strike out and a fly out to end the inning.

Falmouth scored again in the fourth inning. Bennett Smith reached on a walk. Hendry singled and Rumpf drove in Smith with an RBI single.

The Yachtsmen reached the 10-run mark in the 4^th. Coyne doubled, Smith walked, and Ben Keller hit an RBI single to score Coyne. Sean Dilworth then hit a 2-RBI double to score Smith and Keller.

Wilson shut down the Bulldogs in order in the 5^th to end the game.

Colby Winship took the loss for Portland.

Falmouth pounded out 10 hits. Coyne, Keller, and Hendry each had 2.

In the second game of the twin-bill, Portland took a first inning lead when they loaded the bases with a base hit, a walk and an error. Crosby then singled to center field to drive in one run. A base running error on the play led to two Portland runners on third base. A heady play by Falmouth short stop Brady Coyne got both runners out for a double play to end the inning.

In the bottom of the first, Coyne reached on a line drive single. Gus Ford then bunted for a base hit. With two outs, Bennett Smith delivered a 2 RBI single to put Falmouth ahead 2-1.

Falmouth broke open the game in the bottom of the second by scoring 7 runs. Sam Kidder was hit by a pitch to reach first base. Coyne doubled to drive in Kidder. Gus Ford then hit a 2-run homer. Patrick Gill kept the line moving with a single and Bennett Smith doubled. Ben Keller walked to load the bases. Sean Dilworth cleared the bases by ripping a grand slam home run and an 8-1 FHS lead.

Portland got an unearned run in the top of the fourth inning. With one out, Becker walked and Page singled. Then with two outs, Bibeau reached on an error to load the bases. Buck was then hit by a pitch to drive in a run.
