Falmouth beats Thorton Academy in a Thriller

Brady Coyne hit a walk –off single to score Eban Daniels in the bottom of the 7th inning as Falmouth beat Thorton Academy 4-3. Falmouth moves to 6-2 for the season and Thorton Academy took its first loss to drop to 6-1.

The Trojans started hot. Cody Bowker and Brady Graffam each hit solo home runs in the top of the first to jump out to a quick 2-0 lead. Falmouth’s Gus Ford sparked the Yachtsmen in the bottom of the first by ripping a deep line-drive that one-hopped the fence for a ground rule double. He would come around to score on two wild pitches to cut the lead to 2-1 after one inning.

Bennett Smith was on the mound for Falmouth. After the first inning outburst, he settled down and kept the Trojans at bay. He struck out 2 in the second inning. In the third Thorton had a runner reach on an error, steal second and move to third on a ground out. Smith picked him off to end the inning and end the threat.

With 2 outs in the bottom on the third, Sam Kidder reached on an error and moved to second on an error. Ford came through again by hitting an infield single to score Kidder and even the game at 2-2.

Thorton Academy again took the lead in the top of the fourth inning. A single and a double scored a run for a 3-2 run. The Trojans kept the pressure with another single and a stolen base to put runners on second and third. Smith put an end to the threat by picking off the runner at second.

The lead was short lived as Falmouth tied up the game again in the bottom of the fourth inning. Patrick Gill walked and stole second. Sean Dillworth walked. A passed ball moved the runners to second and third and a wild pitch scored Gill for the 3-3 tie.

Smith took over and shut down the Trojans in order in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings. For Falmouth, Kidder reached on a walk in the fifth and Smith reached on a walk in the sixth, but the Yachtsmen could not capitalize on either of those opportunities.

In the bottom of the seventh, Falmouth’s Eban Daniels led off with a walk. He moved to second on a wild pitch. Kidder then walked. With one out, Coyne hit a sharp line-drive just out of the reach of the short-stop. Daniels raced around third and scored when the throw from center field short hopped the catcher. Falmouth walked-off with the 4-3 win.

Smith earned the win going all 7 innings. He struck out 5, gave up 5 hits, did not walk anyone, and picked off 2 base runners.  

Joshua Kopetski took the loss for Thorton Academy.  He pitched 6.1 innings, gave up only 3 hits. He struck out 10, but walked 6 and threw 5 wild pitches.

SOUTH PORTLAND 2, FALMOUTH 0

Bradley McMains pitched a one-hitter with nine strikeouts to lead the Red Riots (4-1) past the Yachtsmen (5-2) at South Portland. The lefty kept Falmouth off-balance all game and was effective at handling the Falmouth base runners.

In the top of the first inning, Sam Kidder walked and moved to second on a wild pitch but was stranded there.

In the Riot’s half of the first, a base hit and 2 stolen bases had a runner of third base. Kidder made a diving catch on a line drive hit to center field. The throw back to the infield was mis-played and the runner scored for a 1-0 SP lead after one inning.

In the second inning, Dom Tracy was hit by a pitch. Bennet Smith hit into a fielder’s choice replacing Tracy at first. Smith was thrown out attempting to steal second to end the Falmouth half of the inning.

In the bottom of the second inning, South Portland strung together 3 hits and scored a run to take a 2-0 lead. Brady Coyne turned a double play for Falmouth to end any further damage.

Eli Cowperthwaite started on the mound for Falmouth. He scattered 8 hits, struck out 4 and did not walk anyone. He gave up 2 runs, 1 of them unearned. After the second inning, he kept South Portland offense in check, but the Yachtsmen could not mount a rally to even the score.

Falmouth got another base runner in the third inning when Brennan Rumpf reached on an error, but McMains picked him off first.

Brady Coyne broke the through with a base hit in the fourth inning for Falmouth, but he was caught stealing.

Cowperthwaite was effective at preventing South Portland from increasing their lead. He gave up a hit in the sixth inning and with 2 outs was replaced by Ben Wilson. Wilson came in and promptly picked off the base runner at first to end the inning without throwing a pitch.

Falmouth went quietly in the seventh inning and South Portland took the victory.

Noah Dreifus had three hits and a run scored for South Portland. Andrew Heffernan chipped in a hit and an RBI single.

Falmouth had only 1 hit with only 1 runner making it to second base.

Scarborough hands Falmouth its first loss of the season

Scarborough’s aggressive offense and a solid pitching performance from Joe Townsend was too much for Falmouth as the Red Storm beat the Yachtsmen 9-3 on Tuesday. Each offense got nine hits, but Scarborough was able to take advantage of a few Falmouth miscues and the Yachtsmen were unable to capitalize on the opportunities they had.  

Scarborough got on the board in the first inning. Donahue doubled and Nick Frink hit a 2-run homer. In the Falmouth half of the inning, Sam Kidder singled and stole second, but was left stranded on third base.

In the third inning, Scarborough had a runner reach on an error and moved to third base on a base hit. With runners on first and third, Scarborough attempted a double steal that was mis-played and resulted in a run scoring. A sacrifice fly led to the second run in the inning. Ethan Hendry threw out a runner attempting to steal third base – limiting the damage.

In the bottom of the third, Brady Coyne singled for the Yachtsmen. Kidder hit a deep fly ball to center field but was robbed of a home run by a nice catch by the Scarborough center fielder. Scarborough kept their 4-0 lead and prevented any momentum shift to Falmouth.

In the fourth inning, Falmouth’s Gus Ford singled, and Patrick Gill doubled to put runners on second and third. Bennet Smith delivered an RBI groundout for the Yachtsmen’s first run. Ben Keller had another ground out RBI that cut Scarborough’s lead to 4-2 after four innings.

Falmouth threatened again in the fifth. Brennan Rumpf and Kidder each singled, but a hard line drive to the outfield was caught to end the inning.

Scarborough broke the game open in the sixth inning. The first two batters reached with singles. A double steal and a Falmouth error resulted in one run. An infield hit plated the second run of the inning. With two outs and runners on first and third, Ashton Blanchette sliced a line drive down the left field line that was just outside the reach of Gus Ford’s diving attempt. Blanchette ended up with a triple driving in two more runs.

With one out in the Falmouth half of the sixth, Smith reached on an error, Keller walked, and Hendry singled. With the bases loaded, Pete McCluskey delivered a sacrifice fly to score Smith. The next Falmouth hitter went down on strikes limiting Falmouth to only 1 run for the inning. Scarborough led 8-2 after six innings.

In the seventh inning, Scarborough drew a walk and scored on a Frink double. Falmouth threatened again when Coyne reached on a base hit, Kidder reached on an error and Gill reached on a base hit, but a line drive double play ended that threat.

Bennet Smith took the loss in 6 innings of work for Falmouth. He struck out 2, allowed 8 hits and did not walk anyone. He was charged with 8 runs, but several of them were un-earned. Ben Wilson pitched the 7th inning for Falmouth. He struck out 1, walked 1, and allowed 1 run on 1 hit.

Scarborough’s Joe Townsend went the distance. He allowed 3 runs on 9 hits and 1 walk. He struck out 5 in earning the victory.

Scarborough moved to 3-0 on the season while Falmouth fell to 5-1. Falmouth will host Portland for a double header on Saturday beginning at 11:00AM.

Falmouth Sweeps Double Header From Deering 13-0 and 10-1

In game 1 of the double-header, Falmouth scored early and often and solid pitching kept Deering off the board as the Yachtsmen won 13-0 in 5 innings.

Dom Tracy started on the mound for Falmouth. He gave up 2 hits in the first inning, but did not allow another base runner in 4 innings of work. He earned the win allowing the 2 hits striking out two and not allowing a walk.  

DomTracy picked up the win on the mound and drove in 2 runs in the first game of the double header.

Brady Coyne led off the game for FHS with a single. Sam Kidder walked and Gus Ford drove in Coyne with a sacrifice fly. Tracy walked and Ben Keller had a 2-RBI single to make it 3-0 after the first inning.

Bennet Smith and Brady Coyne anchored the left side of the infield and both played big roles in the offense.

Falmouth got three more runs in the second. Brennan Rumpf reached on an error and scored on a wild pitch. Coyne and Kidder each drew a walk and scored on a hard hit ball by Bennett Smith that was ruled an error.

In the 4th inning, Smith reached again on an error and scored on a Keller RBI single. Falmouth led 7-0 after 4 innings.

Falmouth closed out the scoring with 6 runs in the 5th inning. Ethan Hendry started things with a walk. Coyne singled and Kidder walked. Gus Ford delivered a bases loaded 2-RBI single.  Smith walked to load the bases and Tracy drew a walk to bring in Kidder. Keller then hit into a fielder’s choice that resulted in another 2 runs for Falmouth. Ben Wilson’s grounder scored Tracy for Falmouth’s final run.

Patrick Gill came into pitch the 5th inning and retired the Rams in order.

In the second game, three Falmouth pitchers combined to keep Deering hitless for 6 innings. Eli Cowperthwaite started on the mound for FHS. He worked three innings and earned the win. He struck out 3, walked 1 and did not allow a hit.

Ben Wilson pitched the 4th and 5th innings. He struck out 1, and did not allow a walk or a hit.

Brennan Rumpf came in to close out the game. In the 6th, he struck out the side in order. Deering finally broke through in the 7th with 2 hits and scored their only run of the day. Rumpf ended up striking out 4 and did not allow a walk in 2 innings of work.

Sam Kidder started the scoring for Falmouth in the first. He reached on a walk and stole 2nd and 3rd and scored on an error. Gus Ford drew a walk and moved to third on a perfectly executed hit-and-run by Patrick Gill. Bennett Smith drove in Ford with an RBI sacrifice fly.  Falmouth led 2-0 after 1.

In the 4th inning, Smith roped a double and moved to third with a stolen base. Pete McCluskey drove in Smith with a single. McCluskey moved to 2nd on a passed ball and 3rd on a ground out. Eban Daniels walked and stole 2nd. With 2 outs and runners on 2nd and 3rd, Deering intentionally walked Coyne to load the bases for Kidder.   Kidder made them pay by ripping a single to drive in 2 more runs. FHS took a 5-0 lead after 4.

In the 5th, Smith reached on an error and scored on a RBI single by Ben Wilson.

FHS got 2 more in the 6th inning. Coyne singled and came in to score on Ford’s RBI single. Ford stole 2nd and came in to score on an RBI single by Mitch Ham. FHS led 8-0 after 6 innings.

Falmouth closed out the scoring in the 7th. Daniels walked and Keller reached on an error. Kidder capped his big day at the plate by roping a 2-RBI double off the green monster to give Falmouth a 10-0 lead. Deering went 10 straight innings without a hit before getting 2 in the seventh and scored their only run of the day to avoid a shut-out.

Falmouth wins 4-3 over Biddeford

On Tuesday, the Falmouth Yachtsmen beat the Biddeford Tigers to move to 3-0 on the season.

Bennett Smith pitched a complete game for Falmouth. He allowed three runs on seven hits, striking out four and walking one for his second win of the season.

Falmouth got 2 runs in the second inning. Smith lined a single to left and moved around on Ben Keller’s walk and a stolen base. Smith scored on a passed ball and Keller scored on a Brennan Rumpf RBI fielder’s choice.

Falmouth got two more runs in the third. Gus Ford reached on a fielder’s choice and scored on an RBI single by Patrick Gill. Gill stole a base and scored on an RBI ground out by Smith.

Patrick Gill’s RBI single and run scored proved to be the difference in the score.

Biddeford got all of their runs in the fourth, They loaded the bases without hitting the ball out of the infield. Will Harriman delivered a 2-RBI double. The Tigers got their final run on another infield hit.

Falmouth ended the game in the bottom of the seventh with 2 fine defensive plays. Peter McCluskey snared a hard grounder down the 3rd base for the first out and Sam Kidder made a long running catch in the center field gap to end the game.

Falmouth will play a double header on Saturday versus Deering at Hadlock field, Game times are 1:00PM and 3:00PM.
